National Voter Registration Day (5 February 2014) helps young people understand registration changes and ensure they’re eligible to vote at the next election.
New changes put many first-time voters in danger of unwittingly finding themselves without a vote. But new, free classroom resources can help.
In the past, voters were registered by the head of their household. But by the general election next year, voters will have to register themselves. This is likely to hit school leavers hardest as they will form the bulk of new voters.
So, to help, National Voter Registration Day organiser Bite the Ballot has some free classroom resources, which include an accessible new voter registration form designed with government support.
Ofsted Chair, Baroness Sally Morgan, said:
‘I am pleased to support Bite the Ballot’s National Voter Registration Day. It is essential that we prepare our young people for their future and that they are ready to become active and well-informed citizens.
‘This exciting campaign is an important step in engaging students in the democratic process and encouraging them to have a stake in their future.’
Rapper Tinie Tempah is also backing National Voter Registration Day, along with a host of other celebrities including Eliza Doolittle, Jamal Edwards and Dominique Moore.
